Into the 2nd half and the Mavs built on their lead with whilst getting good rotation on their bench.

The second half started with the Mavs in full control of the game, and it became a bit of a shoot out between Mavs guards Felix and Kitchen as to who would leave the court with the most points in the game! The Senior Squad travelled to the Pumas on Sunday evening in the first of two back to back games in two days.

They were determined to leave with the victory after losing the last 5 games they had met in the league and cup. The Mavs were without Innes (work commitments) and Fish (Long term injury).

The Mavs started the game with a high intensity on defence, putting pressure on the Pumas point guard and causing turnovers which they converted into fastbreak layups. The defence kept them fully in control of the game, using both a 2-3 zone and 3-2 zone. The first quarter ended with the Mavs up 14-6.

Into the 2nd quarter built on their lead with 6 unanswered points by James Kitchen midway through the 2nd quarter, who leads the Mavs in scoring this season, with some great shooting. At the end of the half finished with the Mavs up by 12 points up, 30-18, in a low scoring half.

The second half started with the Mavs in full control of the game, the entire squad contributed to a great display of teamwork, hardwork on defence and a desire to attack the hoop. As well as Kitchen's 21 points in the game, Andy B, Pedro and Mark Gaunt also contributed with good points. The Mavs kept the Pumas down to an average of 10 points a quarter which impressed Coach Farmer as the defence all season has been the key reason for their success.

This was the end of the Mavs losing streak against the Pumas, the game finished 42-69 in favour of the Mavs.

1st Quarter - Mavericks 15 - Worcester 25
2nd Quarter - Mavericks 11 - Worcester 10
3rd Quarter - Mavericks 14 - Worcester 22
4th Quarter - Mavericks 7 - Worcester 13

The Senior Squad entertained Team Worcester at home on Monday night. The Mavs were without Innes (work commitments) and Fish (Injured).

The Mavs lined up against a very strong Worcester side who play in the West Midlands Premier Division. The Mavs started the game well with good defensive pressure whilst taking care of the ball on the offensive end and getting into good scoring opportunities. Up until the last 4 minutes of the quarter the score stayed within a 2 point gap however a surge by Worcester with some great offensive rebounding lead to easy scores at the hoop and a 9 point unanswered run, the first quarter ended with the Mavs down 15-25.

Into the 2nd quarter Team Worcester built on their 10 point lead with some great shooting, whilst restricting the Mavs to very few high percentage shooting opportunities. The Mavs also had some poor turnovers but were able to control their own defensive boards and at the end of the half the Mavs were still only down by 11 points thanks to scoring from Kitchen and Felix. The half ended 26-35, in a low scoring half.

The second half started well for the Mavs with a great defensive display and a quick basket by Kitchen on the break. Preece was then fouled on a break away which the referee called as a flagrant foul, this was argued a bit too strongly by the offending Worcester player and a technical foul was also called which put Preece at the line for 4 free throws. Preece was able to hit 3 out of the 4 free throws to bring the Mavs back within 9 points, however another offensive surge by Worcester with clinical outside shooting, pulled them further away and the lead increased to 17 points at the end of the 3rd quarter, 40-57.

The Mavs came out for the fourth quarter with a positive attitude and had a 7 point unanswered scoring run thanks to strong offensive plays from Felix and Balwah. Unfortunately this was the end of the Mavs scoring and Worcester finished the game strongly, the game finished with the Mavs losing their first home game of the season 47-70.

The next game is AWAY on Sunday 20th November verses Pumas, Tip off 7.30pm.

1st Quarter - Eagles 19 - Mavericks 11
2nd Quarter - Eagles 17 - Mavericks 22
3rd Quarter - Eagles 7 - Mavericks 22
4th Quarter - Eagles 18 - Mavericks 14

The Senior Squad made the trip over to Cheltenham to play the Eagles on Friday night. The Mavs were without Felix and Fish (Injured), Innes and Pacey (personal), but had a debut for the season for Agrippa Methula.

The Mavs went into this game full of confidence but this was soon dashed as the Eagles won the tip and took an early lead through good outside shooting by Phil Battrick of the Eagles, who finished with 8 of the Eagles 19 points in the 1st quarter. The Mavs were sluggish throughout the 1st quarter without Felix running the point guard position, but Kitchen's determined play kept the Mavs in the game with 10 of the Mavs 11 points in the 1st. Eagles up 19-11.

Into the 2nd quarter the Mavs settled into the game and increased their scoring to shots percentage as well as controlling their own defensive boards against the Eagles big men. Scoring from Preece, Potter, Gaunt, Balwah and Farmer allowed the Mavs to chip away at the Eagles lead and the half ended with the Eagles having a small lead 36-33.

The second half began with the Mavs pressing the Eagles to try and push the pace of game, however several personal fouls against the Mavs putting players into foul trouble meant the Mavs had to revert back to their zone defence. The Mavs were able to keep their intensity though and half way through the 3rd quarter the Mavs went on a 10 point unanswered scoring streak again with points from Kitchen, Gaunt, Balwah and Preece. The Mavs ended the quarter outscoring the Eagles 22 points to 7. The Mavs up 55-43.

The fourth quarter saw the Mavs rest Farmer, who is still coming back from an injured ankle, along with Preece who was in foul trouble all the way through the 3rd quarter on 4 fouls. Scoring from all players on the court kept the Eagles at arms length until the final whistle.

This was a scrappy game on the smallest court in the league but it was one that the Mavs needed to win if they had any aspirations of being in Division One at the mid season break.

The game ended with the Mavs taking the victory 69-61.

The next game is HOME on Monday 14th November verses Team Worcester at Whitecross Sports Hall, Tip off 8.15pm.

4th Quarter - Mavericks 24 - Raiders 11

The Senior Squad were looking to keep their 100% home record intact against the Gloucester University Raiders on Monday..

Missing from this game was Fish (Knee), along with Innes and Wood (work commitments), with Farmer making his comeback to action.

The Mavs again controlled the game from the tip which inturn created an easy score for Pacey to take an early lead. The Mavs played a 3 guard press to start the match which put immense pressure on the opponents point guard, this lead to plenty of transition basketball and easy fastbreak points for Felix and Kitchen, the 1st quarter finished with the Mavs 22-7 up.

Into the 2nd quarter the Radiers made several strong moves to the hoop with their big man Kehinde (No.15), they also moved from a zone defence to a man defence which caught out the Mavs on their first few posessions. A time out from Coach Farmer gave the Mavs time to regroup. They came back after the time out with much more intensity on offence playing team basketball screening on and off the ball, lead by some great scoring from James Kitchen who scored 9 of his 21 points in the 2nd quarter. The quarter came to an end with the Mavs extending their lead to 47-19.

Into the second half the Mavs kept their high intensity levels going at both ends of the cour. It was great to see all of the squad getting on the scoresheet, along with the highlights of the game coming from Centre Jason Pacey making some huge rejections and Kitchen almost at the ring tipping home a missed shot!

The game ended with the Mavs taking a comfortable victory 86-35.

2nd Quarter - Mavericks 39 - Blazers 24

The Senior Squad entertain the newly reformed Gloucester Blazers on Monday 17th. The Mavs were keen to keep their league record above .500 with a win against the Blazers, who had some familiar faces in their line-up.

Missing from this game was Farmer (ankle) and Innes (work commitments).

This game saw the introduction of Hereford Mavericks newest signing Centre Jason Pacey. Mavs controlled the game from the tip however poor offence lead to the Blazer getting fast break opportunities which the Mavs players stopped by putting them to the line. Fortunately for the Mavs the Blazers missed their Free Throws, and then later in the quarter were able to get on the scoresheet. the 1st quarter finished with the Mavs 17-7 up.

Into the 2nd quarter the Blazers made several unanswered scores, including a big 3 pointer from Blazers captain Mike Keith, this shrunk the Mavs lead to only 3 points. A time out from Coach Farmer gave the Mavs time to regroup. They came back after the time out with much more intensity at both ends of the court lead by some great scoring from James Kitchen. Unfortunately during the 2nd quarter a Blazers player fell awkardly on his arm, the player was able to walk off the court with assistance and the quarter came to an end with the Mavs extending their lead to 39-24.

During the half time break the injured player from the Blazers deteriorated and needed further medical treatment. The contest was called off at half time due the length of delay waiting for the ambulance to arrive and deal with injury to the Gloucester Blazers player.

The game is due to be replayed sometime in November, date to be confirmed. Mavs Head Coach Steve Farmer later found out that the player had fractured his radius.

The next game is HOME on Monday 31st October verses the Gloucester Raiders at Whitecross High School, Tip off 8.15pm, please come along and support the Mavs!!!

4th Quarter - Black Cats 22 - Mavericks 14

Missing from this game was Farmer (ankle) and Fish (work).

The meeting between the Hereford Black Cats and Hereford Mavericks was the first match between Hereford sides in the GBBA in over 4 years. The Black Cats formed this year and are made up of all Lithuanian players staying around the Herefordshire region. To add some extra spice into the game Monty Berzonskas and Airdas Surkus also made the move to the Black Cats in the off season.

The Mavs knew that this would probably their toughest game of the season as the Black Cats had played summer league in Bristol and won the league undefeated, which is an impressive feat with the quality of players and teams which enter each year down in Bristol.

At the warm up it was obvious that the Mavs were very much undersized with the Black Cats having 4 big men over 6"5 and at the tip control of the game went to the home team. Strong inside scoring along with keeping the Mavs to single shot opportunities meant the Black Cats were able to take a commanding lead

The Senior Squad had their second Away game of the season on Sunday, at Cheltenham against the Cougars. The Mavs took their 100% record against the Cougars looking to extend their winning streak this season.

Missing from this game was Farmer (ankle) and Preece (hols).

Mavs controlled the game from the tip however easy scores were missed early on in the game which made the game a scrappy affair. All starters were got on the scoresheet again showing the offensive strengths of the Mavs. Even with the easy misses the Mavs finished the 1st quarter 15-1 up.

The contest was over by midway into the 2nd with Pedro constantly getting to the hoop to make the easy basket or making the free throws when put to the line. The rest of the game was much of the same with the Mavs limiting to Cougars to only a couple of baskets per quarter. The disappointing part of the game was the Mavs constantly missing easy baskets. The Mavs did however get a chance to test their new defense which produced several turnovers for the opposition.

The next game is AWAY on Sunday 2nd October verses the Black Cats in Hereford.

2nd Quarter - Mavs 15 - Hawks 5
3rd Quarter - Mavs 21 - Hawks 9
4th Quarter - Mavs 17 - Hawks 13

The Senior Squad had their first Home game of the season on Monday, entertaining the Cheltenham Hawks at their home court Whitecross High School.

The Mavs were keen to get a win after the narrow defeat the previous week by the Tornadoes and Coach Farmer's pre game talk was about getting off to a strong start and dominating the defensive boards.

Both teams got off to a slow start with their offence, however in the early going the Mavs took a 7 - 3 lead, with Pedro again giving the Mavs a spark on offence and the strong back line of Balwah Potter and Farmer holding strong at the defensive end. The 1st quarter was littered with mistakes and turnovers by both teams but at the end of the quarter the Hawks had a one point lead, 13-12.

Into the second some fresh legs gave the Mavs some good movement on offence and the team took control of the match only allowing the Hawks to score 5 points in the quarter whilst Preece, Balwah, Gaunt, Kitchen and Wood all got points on the board for the Mavs, with the score at half time 27-18, Mavs up by 9!

Although unforced errors were still causing the Mavs to turn over the ball too often the Mavs came out for the second half on fire with 8 unanswered points with Balwah and Felix carrying the scoring threat and stretching their lead still further. The Hawks in the third were limited to a mere 9 points compared with the free scoring by the Mavs with 21. This proved too much for the Hawks to come back from and the game was over in reality by the end of the fourth quarter. The Mavs were able to give good minutes too their entire squad and it was good to see Fish and Wood get some quality minutes under their belts.

The game ended on a sour note with Farmer going over on his right ankle, diagnosis is not as bad as first thought, x-rays showed no hairline fractures of a break in the ankle bones, heavy tissue and ligament damage should mean that he will be back in 2-4 weeks.

The game ended with the Mavs taking their first win of the season comfortably in the end 65-40.

The Mavs can take a lot of positives away from the game, the defence again was strong and gave the team a strong platform however the team will need to take care of the ball a lot better especially against the stronger teams in the league how they started the game and their early movement in offence.

The next game is AWAY on Sunday 25th September verses the Cougars in Cheltenham.

2nd Quarter - Tornadoes 19 - Mavs 13
3rd Quarter - Tornadoes 11 - Mavs 12
4th Quarter - Tornadoes 15 - Mavs 6

The Senior Squad travelled to Cheltenham for their first game of the season and after dominating the 1st quarter and being ahead for most of the game until the fourth quarter they let a winning start slip through their fingers eventually going down 56 - 48 at the end of the game.

The Mavs got off to a great start with Benj, Pedro and Andy B all making telling contributions on offence, and the starting five as a whole being well as a unit on defence, Mavs took a 7 point to nil lead and later in the quarter were comfortably up 14 -3. The quarter finished 11 - 17 in favour of the Mavs.

Into the second and the Mavs came out with some unforced turnovers, into the game for the Tornadoes was Castello who injected some pace into their offence and he alone forced the Tornadoes back into the match scoring 15 points, with the Mavs points coming from Stef, Nick and a big 3 pointer from Shim to leave the scores level at half time 30 - 30.

The third quarter was a close affair with both teams controlling their defence and scores were hard to come by.

The fourth quarter was the telling factor in this game, the Tornadoes were able to take a strangle hold on the game denying the Mavs easy opportunites. The Mavs movement on offence became static and again careless turnovers and poor shooting by the players on court led to the Tornadoes winning the quarter 15-6 and therefore winning the game 56 - 48.

The Mavs can take a lot of positives away from the game, especially how they started the game and their early movement in offence.

The next game is at HOME on Monday 19th September so get on down and support the Mavs (8:15pm tip off at their home court at Whitecross).
