Head coach Steve Farmer was delighted his men won the cup and cemented third place in Division 2 of the Gloucestershire Basketball Association Men’s League. The Mavericks cup win over Cheltenham Eagles was the most important result in their three-year history. The Hereford side had lost twice in the league to the Eagles but pulled off an excellent 77-69 triumph in the cup final. “It was a great team performance and will help to raise the profile of the team in the West Midlands,” said Farmer. “We were helped this year with new arrivals Stefan Potter, Jose Gomez, Andy Balwah and Adam Rapragner. “All four of the players have boosted the squad and will look to improve the squad for next season when we will hope to have a much more settled team.” The league season had been tough on the Mavericks who struggled to keep a settled side throughout the campaign. The Mavericks won just two Division 1 matches in the first half of the season and dropped into Division 2 for the second half. Despite two back-to-back losses in Division 2, Farmer’s men put together a four-match unbeaten run to finish in third spot. They also had the satisfaction of being the team with the best defensive record in Division 1 and 2. Newcomer Balwah picked up the Most Valuable Player award at the club’s end-of-season awards evening. Nick Preece was voted the players’ Player of the Year and Ian Shimmel was the Most Improved Player. The club will starting a new weekly training session for an under-15 side which will add to their under-18 and senior squads. Children, aged from 10 to 15 years old and who would like to try basketball, are needed for the new team. The Mavericks will also be hosting their annual summer camp in July for players aged 10 to 15 years. The camp is taking place from July 26 to 28 at Whitecross High School and Sports College in Hereford. HistoryNow into our fith season, the orginal Hereford Basketball Team were reformed in 2007 and entered into the Mens Gloucestershire Basketball League. The clubs ethos is to promote the game of basketball within the Herefordshire region. Our ultimate aim is to get more young people playing the sport both just for fun and competitively. As a starting point we entered a team into the Mens Gloucestershire Basketball League in 2007, with the view to build a strong enough squad to enter into the national league sometime in the near future. In 2009 we started an Under 18's Mavericks squad. This has been hugely successful, with players from all over the Herefordshire region coming down to the training sessions. They have had several matches against regional opposition and some of the players in the squad have represented the Senior team throughout the 2009/10 season. In April 2010 we started an Under 16's session aimed at 13 - 16 year olds interesed in learning more about the game and developing their skills. The long term aim of the club is to get these players into regular matches against more established teams from nearby counties, where basketball has much stronger roots so that they can gain experience to play at a higher level. In June 2010 we became a 2 STAR accredited club with England Basketball. This award is given to clubs that have developed both in terms of the amount of players in various age groups it has signed on and its ability to coach players at club level and within the community. In early 2011 we started our U13's squad, this is the youngest current squad, which is aimed at 10-13 year olds starting basketball for the first time. This will hopefully help improve future squads and the standard of play throughout the Herefordshire district. Into the new season of 2011/12 the Hereford Mavericks will be represented in the Worcestershire Central Venue League at U16, U14 and U12 age groups. The Mavericks now have weekly training sessions for each of these individual age groups.
