2011/12 Match Reports

CENTRAL VENUE LEAGUE WORCESTER.

Friday 6th January

Once again girls and boys from around the region gathered for the Wolves Academy Basketball Central Venue League. First basket of the night went to Claudio Almeida who shot the Worcester Wolves Boys U12s into an early lead against Hereford U12s. With Hereford at the head of the table and beating Worcester earlier in the season, it was a big match for the Wolves boys. Despite some excellent defensive work from Hereford's Vasco Felix, the Wolves maintained a small margin until the buzzer, a 20-5 win which takes them above Hereford in the league, but only on points difference.

Wolves Girls U12s came out fighting against the young side from St. Joseph's. Leila Harding opened the scoring for the Wolves Girls, but it was Jordan Orgee who was singled out by her coach, Sarah Lewis, for the improvement she showed in a match that the girls won in some style. Joseph Moss got on the score sheet for St. Josephs, and Harry Cunningham got the vote of his coach for his overall performance.

Wolves Girls U14s were unable to follow on from the good work of the U12s, losing to Hereford U14s 31-8. Hereford coach, Steve Farmer, praised his team for their hard work and in particular, Jamie Donald's vision and outside shooting. Abigail Finn and Laura Tiffney shone for the Wolves, but Hereford were too strong.

Big Sky U14s from West Bromwich extended their unbeaten sequence to three games in a hotly fought contest against Wolves Boys U14s, pulling away to win 26-16. Dan Cox showed good leadership for the Wolves, but Big Sky's Georgia Darby played a huge part in thwarting the Wolves' attack with some great defensive play.

Arden Griffins U16s beat Hereford 2 U16s 42-15. Despite being on the losing team, Hereford 2's coach praised his team, in particular Tom Bayliss who he described as 'awesome'. Marinos Papageorgiou showed good leadership skills in a win that took his team to the top of the table.

The closest game of the night was a 35-31 win for Wolves U16s against Hereford 1 U16s. In a match that was neck and neck throughout the Wolves held their nerve to atone for their 2-point defeat in December. Both Angus Flynn for Hereford and Matt Vicary for the Wolves were praised by their respective coaches for their scoring and rebounding skills.

With two more evenings of basketball before the Finals night, all three leagues (U12, U14, U16) are hotting up with most teams still well in contention for top spot.

Thanks to Kate at the Worcester St Peters branch of Tesco for her donation of fruit and water for the players.

Match report

This game was played on Wednesday night at the Mavs Home Court Venue instead of at the CVL in Worcester, as agreed by the league. Plenty of families and friends of the players were there to watch the showdown between both of the Mavs U16 teams. Guest coaches were on hand to take charge of each team, Pedro Felix (Mavs starting Point Guard) took control of the 2nd team and Nick Preece (Assistant Coach of the U16's) took control of the 1st team.

The game started with the 1st team taking control from the tip off and positive play from the outset meant that they took an early lead with 6 points unanswered. After an early time out the 2nd team started to gain more confidence which came from their increased intensity on defence controlling their defensive rebounds and converting some good layups at the other end. Ridley was able to make some great inside moves in the first half along with Angus Flynn to keep the 1st team ahead and increasing their lead to 11 points. In the break between the quarters Pedro asked his team to get back quicker on defence and to call for help if a player lost his man. The 2nd team started off the quarter with this in mind and a better desire to get up and down the court quicker lead to them getting plenty of opportunities to get to the hoop, and with Alex Martin leading the attack and making some fast break layups the lead was cut to just 5 points.

Into the second half the 1st team again took control with strong aggressive play at both ends of the court, Flynn was dominant on the boards and was able to get easy scores whilst also coming up with some great blocks at the defensive end. It was a great game enjoyed by all the spectators and throughout the game both teams used what they had been learning in training. The 1st pulled out the victory through their team's better ball movement and a greater desire to work hard on court

Final score Mavs1 51 - Mavs2 35

The U12 Squad played their 2nd game of the season against the U14 Worcester Wolves Girls team. At the tip off it was obvious that the opposition was a lot taller than our squad and that mixed in with the team playing against a girls team for the first time meant the boys were very aprehensive at the start of the game. Tom was able to steady the nerves with some great layups at the start of the game. The boys had been learning the 3 second rule and cutting through the key since the last game so they put this into practice in the game. Worcester Girls team were kept in the game by playing to their strengths with high passes to their tall centre player under the hoop. The Mavs were able to break quickly on the turnovers by the opposition and both Harry G.J. and Jake Mitchell were also able to get onto the scoresheet during the game. The entire team work extremely hard in the game on defence getting steals and causing turnovers and were able to come away with a win.

Final score: Mavericks 19 - Worcester Wolves Boys 17

Squad:
C - Daniel Howells
FW - Kirill Cerneckji
FW - Pawel Opalach
SG - Macaulay Weaver-Owens

PG - Tom Crawford Sharpe
SG - Eiran Berkhordarian

This was an exciting close game throughout with several lead changes. The Mavs definately showed improvements in their game using the pick and roll effectively at times, as well as a more structured defensive display with better communication between our players. Macaulay again led the scoring, whilst both Dan and Pawel in the centre position were able to control the defensive boards and were a definate threat at the offensive end using their height as an advantage.

The opposition was much stronger in this second league game which made this a very close and low scoring game with both teams cancelling each other out with strong defensive plays. Most of the squad got onto the scoresheet and it was great to see their confidence grow after a slow start to the game. The players showed amazing desire to work hard for each other and I believe that this was definately a team performance that won us the game.

The U16's team were looking to get their first win in the Central Venue League on Friday evening but were without Angus Flynn and Jake Spinks. The game was a closely fought affair where the opponents got off to a great start with a couple of fast break layups. After an early time out in the 1st quarter, where Coach Farmer talked to his squad about some key areas where the Mavs weren't performing well. The team came out of the time out and started to play with a lot more confidence and fluidity and were able to restricted the opposition to tough shots as well as get to the basket much more frequently at the offensive end.

With Adam Turner getting into early foul trouble, additional pressure went onto the shoulders of the more senior members of the players on court. All of the starting five were able to get on the scoresheet and it was great to see the squad play on court as a team and use what they had been doing in training within the game. Both Burke and Ridley played well as a partnership, setting up the pick and roll for Point Guard Greg Evans.

Throughout the game the score was close, with the Mavs slightly ahead until the final minute of the game where a strong move from an opposition player hit a reverse layup and tied the game. With literally seconds left on the clock the Mavs had to play one last defensive set to take the game into overtime however Ridley was judged by the referee to have fouled a shooting player which put him to the line for 2 free throws to win the game. He missed the first but scored the second and with that Arden Griffins stole the game 34-33.
